Lemon & Sugar Facial Scrub for acne scars

I don't know about you, but I'm struggling with acne. I keep getting acne in the dead center of my forehead, directly between my brows. As soon as one disappears, another takes its place a few millimeters to the left or right. And they all leave a dark mark - spot.spot.spot *sigh* And it just sucks @&*!

Today, I came across the page of one of Antigua's home grown aspiring models, Joanna Copeland aka Jay, and while going through her pics I saw her 'testimonial' on the use of a DIY Lemon-Sugar Scrub that was effective in taking away the left over scars from her acne breakouts.

I WAS SOLD INSTANTLY!

These are Jay's photos of her acne scars and her skin today [if these do not inspire you to use this treatment, I don't know what will!]

Photos are over a THREE (3) MONTH time span

This is what Jay had to say about the scrub, "...after some research and hearing what other persons said about the LEMON AND SUGAR mask I said I’ll give that a try. So, I have [now] been [using it] for the past 3 months. After the 1st month I saw nothing happening and was about to give up..but I didn't …[and guess what?] It HELPED =) This helped me a lot …[tho]it may not work for everyone... .For the first month i used it day and night  - everyday, but now i only use it twice a week"

So I am going to go get me some lemons and start this easy home treatment. As usual, I'm sharing it with you because sharing is definitely caring! =] Here is a recipe I found online that looks pretty good. This DIY lemon and sugar scrub can be used on both the body and face. It is ideal for rough spots like feet, knees, elbows and hands. It’s also great for nail beds and cuticles. To use on the face, this scrub works wonderfully for those with acne-prone skin. But, of course, the entire body can benefit from a lemon and sugar exfoliation that leaves skin soft and insanely smooth. Indulge in this scrub from head to toe!

Lemon & Sugar Face & Body Scrub

Ingredients:

Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon
1/2 cup of  sugar [brown works well]
1 Tbsp of olive oil
1 Tbsp of organic honey [optional]
1 bowl with lid for storage

Directions:

Add lemon juice and olive oil in to a bowl and mix together. Add the honey and whisk or stir quickly until the ingredients bind together into a medium thick consistency.  Add in the sugar and mix. If you sense that there is not enough sugar to get the scrubbing done, add a bit more. This is purely up to personal preference.

Tips:
  • You can add or subtract the amount of olive oil and honey that you use depending on how thick you want your scrub to be.
  •  I would keep the lemon to the juice of half  freshly cut lemon for every 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.

How to Use

As a face scrub: Cleanse face prior to application (remove makeup etc). Apply to entire face with gentle circular motions. Leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse with cool water. Moisturize with your favorite moisturizer.

This scrub is ideal for people who suffer from breakouts and acne as all of the ingredients are highly beneficial to acne prone skin. Lemon tightens pores and evens out the skin tone, sugar removes dead skin cells and cleans pores, olive oil heals acne scaring, and honey prevents future breakouts.

*Be cautious of using on open wounds as the lemon may sting.

As a body scrub: Apply to body, paying extra close attention to elbows, knees, feet and hands (nails and cuticles especially) and rub in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse. Enjoy the silky softness of your impossibly smooth skin.

Benefits of the Ingredients:

Lemon – A natural source of Vitamin C; an ingredient commonly used to lighten sun and age spots and even out skin tone; A natural astringent that tightens pores and brightens the complexion.
Sugar – A natural exfoliator; a natural source of glycolic acid which evens out skin tone, cleans pores, and improves overall skin texture by removing dead, dull skin cells.
Olive Oil – High in Vitamin E which soothes and heals skin; a natural moisturizing ingredient often used for it’s anti-aging benefits.
Honey – A natural source of anti-oxidants making it a perfect ingredients for age preventions; a natural humectant so it locks water into the skin keeping the complexion hydrated; the antibacterial properties benefit acne-prone skin by reducing breakouts.

How Often to Use:

This scrub, as with any exfoliation scrub, should not be done too often. I would suggest twice weekly but it is completely up to you how often you apply it. You may choose to apply it more regularly to treat acne scars and gradually use it less frequently as time progresses.

For those wanting simply to keep acne breakouts at bay, twice weekly should be ideal.

For Smaller/Daily Batches Use:

1 Tbsp Sugar
1 Tbsp Lemon juice
Olive oil (just enough to form a paste)
Honey if you have it

Let me know if you try it and how it works for you and happy acne-scar-fighting!!

  2. I just made my first batch of this and can already see that it will last a while in the refrigerator as 1/2 cup sugar makes A LOT! I added a bit more sugar to mine after I was done mixing using the amounts in the recipe as I wanted it a bit thicker. My skin feels and looks GREAT!!

Olive oil is not going to make your skin any oilier than it already is; in fact, it may possibly help with that issue! I think I did a post on the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) a while back.

  5. Very nice recipes - may I suggest a natural oil recipe for acne scars (from The Complete Acne Book) which is a mix of Carrot seed oil seed and rosehip oil and optionally a small amount of tamanu or sea buckthorn oil. This is a beautiful healing blend for getting rid of acne scars :) You can also add tea tree oil and turmeric powder for an antibacterial boost in DIY acne masks and scrubs.

  7. Lemons are known as a good source of citric acid and as an effective natural remedy to treat the breakouts. But because it’s acidic, it can dry out your skin. So, you must moisturize after, especially if you have dry skin.

  14. So...I have always had acne prone skin. When I was pregnant with my boys, it was s bad my face literally hurt. Of course the scars were just horrible. I went to the derm, but that was not until I was done breastfeeding my second son. I had a few "expensive" scrubs. Creams and pills. Which were all very expensive but my skin cleared up. Well... now I am working out and eating healthier. Can you believe my breakouts have started up again so bad! Talked to a friend and she told me its the toxins leaving my body (through my face). I was so surprised...thinking how can I have this breakout when I'm drinking more water. Have stopped my 1 Coke a day fix, stopped candy and the last sweet I had was two days ago "small piece of cake for a party". So, I say that all to say. I will try the scrub and mask immediately. I'm sold, and will take pictures along the way! Thank you for posting positive, natural beauty secrets ;-) Really appreciate it.

    1. Hi LaToya! I have to first point out that this scrub is meant to help remove the marks acne leaves behind and not get rid of the acne itself. When I started breaking out due to the products I was using in my hair, I had to refer to a Dermatologist to deal with the issue. I am sure you can find some easy DIYs online to assist you in fighting your acne (some even available on my page) but this particular recipe is just for those ugly marks acne leaves behind. Hope that helped! Good luck x

    2. Remember the movie Avatar?

Where all those blue people were connected by an
      “energy”?

They were able to communicate with plants and
      animals?

Well, that is not just a fantasy.

It turns out that kind of “energy” is real.

Deepak Chopra wrote about a study, where scientists
saw monkeys dipping potatoes in saltwater before
      eating it.

Then they saw the rest of the tribe doing it.

      Pretty logical so far right?

But get this: Monkeys in different parts of the WORLD
started dipping potatoes in salt water.

There was no way they could have communicated
      with each other.

The only explanation was that they communicated
      through an invisible, “intelligent energy.”

The Japanese call this energy “Ki”.

      It stands for “Life Force”

In fact, a man named Mikao Usui developed a
      SYSTEM of healing called Reiki.

And this system of healing uses this intelligent energy
      to heal people.

It is one of the most ancient, profound and
POWERFUL healing arts in the world.

Reiki masters can HEAL just by touching someone
      with their hands.

They can also heal people REMOTELY using their
      intention.

      It’s amazing.

It USED to take YEARS and THOUSANDS of dollars
      to become a Reiki master.

But this guy named Owen Coleman discovered how
to attain these healing powers rapidly.

Even in as little as 48 hours.

According to him he already had this power, but
don’t realize it. And that’s we don’t have to spend too
      much time learning it.

We just need to recognize it and release it.

[Check out his presentation on Reiki here.]

      Alright, till next time.

      Yours Truly,
      Mr Ana

P.S. - Owen is offering a special training that
      won't be around forever.

He's planning on releasing his training methods on
      a large scale.

But for now, it is invitation only.

So, if I were you, I'd take advantage of that as well.

Look forward to hearing from you!

    1. What we need to keep in mind is that 1/ it took 3 months to completely clear and 2/ she was consistent with it. Personally, my skin does not look anything close to that haha. I have a few dark spots and I spot treated them nightly with fresh lemon juice and they did fade considerably; however, I did not continue it :( However, knowing they faded out proved to me that it works. Who knows what would have happened if I continued it consistently, right? :)

    1. You must learn what the cause of your acne is and how to control it.
    2. The right and effective acne treatment means a treatment not only remove acne from the face but it also stops it from coming again.

I am following the programme "Acne No More" by Medical Researcher and Nutritionist Mike Walden and in it, he covers both these methods perfectly. I had tried a lot of methods to rid myself of my crippling acne. This program worked. My acne had cleared up and very quickly, I might add. My skin is now remarkably clear. Not a day goes by where I don't thank the lord that I found this powerful solution. It really works, I highly recommend you to check it out.

  47. First off- I love your website. This is an old folk remedy that my mom has been telling me to try for a while and I haven't gotten around to it yet. Ever since I had my 3rd baby last year I find I am breaking out like crazy. To my skins detriment I have a bad habit of popping my pimples which only makes the marks worse. I know I shouldn't, but i'm a tad OCD in certain areas and the thought of a nasty pocket of puss in my face is one of them. Now, to wrap up the introduction here is my question- Would limes work as well as lemons ? I mean, they're both citric acid and vitamin A, right? I ask because even though I know lemons are pretty inexpensive, my food budget doesn't stretch much beyond the bare essentials so we grow what g\fruits and veggies we can at home and I have a lime tree, which I usually use as a substitute for lemon. Has anyone else tried using lime ?
